KILG to KGED to KCGE to KILG

Took a flight on Sunday Febuary 23rd with my son Henry.  We went down to Georgetown and plan was to come back to Wilmington, however breakfast place wasn't opened at Georgetown (I checked and website said they opened at 9, but didn't open until 11) so we ended up flying to a recommended place from Gary called Cambridge and stopped in at Kays.  Henry enjoyed seeing the multiple planes sitting on the ramp and we ate crab dip and BLTs.  Flight back to Wilmington was great.  Henry had a great time until I was on final approach for 27, he pinched his finger and let out a cry, but as a pilot you are taught to Aviate, Navigate, Communicate, so I aviated until that bird was landed.   Winds were 240 @ 12 G 22 when we landed.

Where have you been?

Don't worry everyone, I am still around.  My wife and I have welcomed a new addition to our family, who is a baby girl named Autumn Karli Rideout, born on January 8, 2014.   I did some flying in December, but it was mostly work in the pattern to stay proficient and also currency flights.  I plan on doing a flight soon with pilotsnpaws and want to get my instrument rating in 2014.  I will be updating some posts shortly.

KILG to KFRG with niece and son

This flight was on November 30th, 2013.  My niece, son and I decided to take a trip to go see pop pop and grandma up in New York.  Uneventful flight there and back.  I was number 6 for landing at Republic, man that airport is busy.  They had me on an extended downwind for runway 14.  Enjoy the pictures everyone!

Hey dad, can I fly today?

First Club Plane flight - New Castle - KILG - Local Sightseeing to Cecil County - 58M

On Saturday November 16, 2013, picked up Curtis to take him flying. He is looking into getting his pilots license, so really wanted to take him up for a flight to see a few different airfields, planes, etc.   As much as you plan, weather can keep you from executing what you would like to actually do.  Plan was to go down to Cambridge MD and eat at Kays for breakfast , as a fellow pilot friend recommended, (watch a few planes land while eating) however the weather to the south was all Instrument Flight rules.  Alternate plan was to fly up to Sky Manor, NJ and eat at that restaurant, however the weather was supposed to be marginal and wasn't going to get better, so we flew a local flight, flew over Curtis's moms house in Middletown, flew over my house in Newark and did 2 touch and go landings at Cecil County Airport.  (58M).  The field was just sold at an auction a few months ago.  Seems like a nice airfield.  That is where I took my written exam for my Private Pilot license.  First landing wasn't bad, used short field technique, approach speed was about 62 knots.  There is a video tape of me flying the pattern complete with landing that I will be posting in the next few days.  Third and final landing back at KILG was a greaser.  Landed on 14 and was able to turn off at F3, which is really close to the Club Hangar.  Was a great flight. Thanks everyone for reading!

Thanks to Curtis he got a nice picture of the club plane

Old Flying Adventures - Solo at KPNE in Warrior

Here are some pictures of my First Solo flight at KPNE. Rick Temple was my flight instructor.  I can remember that they had me take off on Runway 15, which is a Runway at Northeast that isn't always used, so I had to remember how to taxi down there, which involved crossing a Runway which to a new pilot seems a little intimidating.  I had to do 3 takeoffs and landings.  I can remember that my brother came up with me and he was the one who took the pictures.  The winds weren't too bad, maybe 6-8 kts.  I had three good takeoffs and landings.  Here are some pictures of Rick congratulating me.  This was a very exciting time!!

Post solo congratulations from Rick

Old Flying Adventures - Why do I fly - First Angel Flight

Why do I fly? I enjoy the various challenges of the changing environment that the plane, wind, weather, traffic and different factors that factor into the safe outcome of a flight.  I also enjoy helping other people.   I found out about an organization called Angel Flight East, which is a non-profit organization that transports ill patients to needed treatment facilities.  I decided to join the organization as a co-pilot.  Once I receive my instrument rating, I will be able to transport patients as PIC.  I performed one of these missions not too long ago.  Here are some pictures.  We were under an IFR (Instrument Flight Plan).  Transported a mother and little girl to needed cancer treatment from WVA to CHOP in Philadelphia, PA.

Old Flying Adventures - (KPNE) Northeast Philadelphia to (N30) Cherry Ridge

This was one of the first flights I made after I received my ticket.  I had to do some computer work and discovered that the flight would only take 45 mins vs a 3hr 30min drive.  Both arrival and departure were uneventful, however this was the first actual short field landing and takeoff that I had performed.  The runway here is 2,986ft with about 2400 usable. This flight was in the middle of the summer.
